First conditional

Hello, hello!
In this unit of English we've learnt how to use conditionals.
Conditionals are sentences with two clauses – an "if" clause and a main clause – that express possibility. Depending on the grade of probability of the sentence, we divide them in different categories.
We use the first conditional when we talk about real and possible situations.

  • I’ll go shopping on the way home if I have time.
  • If it’s a nice day tomorrow, we’ll go to the beach.
  • If Arsenal win, they’ll be top of the league.
  • If it rains, I won't go to the park. 
  • If I study today, I'll go to the party tonight.
  • If I have enough money, I'll buy some new shoes. 
  • She'll be late if the train is delayed. 
  • She'll miss the bus if she doesn't leave soon. 
  • If I see her, I'll tell her.

The first conditional describes a particular situation, whereas the zero conditional describes what happens in general. 
For example (zero conditional): if you sit in the sun, you get burned (here I'm talking about every time a person sits in the sun - the burning is a natural consequence of the sitting).
But (first conditional): if you sit in the sun, you'll get burned (here I'm talking about what will happen today, another day might be different)

In first conditional sentences, the structure is usually if + present simple and will + infinitive. It’s not important which clause comes first.

Zero conditional

In this unit of English we've learnt how to use the zero conditional. 
Conditionals are sentences with two clauses – an "if" clause and a main clause – that express possibility.
Depending on the grade of probability of the sentence, we divide them in different categories. The first one being the "Zero Conditional".

We use the zero conditional to talk about things that are always true.

  • If you heat water, it boils. 
  • When the sun goes down, it gets dark. 
  • It lights up if you push that button. 
  • If it rains, tennis lessons are held in the gym. 
  • When John is out of the office, I take his calls.

The present simple is used in both clauses.

Area of triangles and parallelograms

Hello, hello!
As we're learning about the properties of polygons, we need to know what the area of a polygon is.

Area

The area of a polygon is the quantity that expresses the extent of a shape. It is two-dimensional and is normally calculated by multiplying the length and the height of the shape.


The typical shape of rooms and other spaces are not just a rectangle or a square, so we'll need to add the areas of the shapes that compose them:


Other problem we may have is when the area we want to measure is a shape within another shape:

In this case, we need to subtract the area of the outside rectangle minus the area of the small one, in order to know the difference between them.

Area of a paralellogram

Paralellograms are always measured as if they were rectangles:


Area of a triangle

The area of a triangle is (height × width) ÷ 2.



Area of a Regular Polygon

The area of a Regular Polygon is the Perimeter x apothem / 2.
